Clinical significance of determination of changes of serum Hcy, IGF-II and TSGF levels after operation in patients with esophageal cancer

Objective: To study the changes of serum Hcy, IGF-II and TSGF levels after operation in patients with esophageal cancer. Methods: Serum Hcy (with immuno-chemistry), IGF-II (with RIA) and TSGF (with biochemistry) levels were determined in 33 patients with esophageal cancer both before and after operation as well as in 35 controls. Results: Before operation, serum: Hcy, IGF-II and TSGF levels in the patients were significantly higher than those in the controls (P < 0.01). After operation in 29 cases without recurrence at 6 months, the levels remained dropped markedly and approached those in controls. However in the 4 patients with recurrence, the levels increased again,approaching those before operation. Conclusion: Serum levels of Hcy, IGF-II and TSGF might be useful for diagnosis and predicting therapeutic efficacy after operation in patients with esophageal cancer. (authors)
