The utility of 18F FDG neuro PET CT imaging in diagnostic workup of patients with clinical suspicion of progressive supra nuclear palsy

Parkinsons plus syndromes is group of neurodegenerative disorders which includes Frontotemporal Dementia, Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD), Multiple System Atrophy, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) and Vascular Parkinsonism with overlapping of symptoms and often they are inappropriately labelled on basis of overlapping clinical symptoms. In this study we evaluated the symptom profile of clinically diagnosed PSP patients and correlated them with the 18F FDG NEURO PET CT findings. This study highlighted the utility of 18F FDG brain PET scan finding in PSP patients by demonstrating unique bilateral cerebral decrease metabolism with further prominently reduced metabolism in frontal and temporal lobes and segregates them from other types of Parkinson plus syndromes. These observations are highly useful and complementing the clinical diagnosis of PSP and serves as a imaging biomarker for early diagnosis of PSP and its treatment planning
