Ultrasound-pathological correlation of ovarian sex cord stromal tumor

Description

Objective: To study the correlation of ultrasonographic features of ovarian sex cord stromal tumors (OSCST) with pathology. Methods: The ultrasound examinations of 23 patients with pathologically confirmed ovarian sex cord stromal tumors were reviewed. Results: Of 23 OSCST, 12 ovarian theca cell tumors were solid masses with regular well-defined borders and heterogeneous low echotexture. There was posterior echo attenuation in 4/12 tumors. The remaining 11 complex masses were ovarian granulosa cell tumors (7), Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors (2), and theca cell tumors (2) with well-defined borders, and low-level echoes in the solid components mixed with cystic areas of varying size. 18/23 OSCST were correctly identified as ovarian tumors and 3/23 were misdiagnosed as subserosal fibroids, 2/23 as ovarian cancer. Conclusion: Ultrasonographic appearance of OSCST combined with clinical features are useful for diagnosis. (authors)
