Hydroxyl radical damage in low oxygen concentrations in irradiated bacteria

Description

New tests have begun to re-evaluate the contribution radicalsOH radicals make to lethal damage in irradiated bacteria. It has been observed that very low concentrations of chemical additives will protect by scavenging radicalsOH when E. coli are x-irradiated in 1.3 per cent O2, but these same concentrations will not protect in air or in 100 per cent N2. These results seem incompatible with earlier work with bacteria. (author)
