Utilization of calorimetry for determining accurately a mass of Pu
Description
Error calculations are discussed and the formula relating the mass determination of a plutonium sample to the response of a calorimeter and to the knowledge of isotopic composition and specific powers are established. It is shown how the uncertainty on the mass is related to the incertainty on the measurement of the power produced by the sample and to the weighted uncertainties on the concentrations and specific powers of the different isotopes. The various parameters and results of error calculations are then studied in detail. They show that by calorimetry it is possible to determine the mass of plutonium in a sample with an accuracy of about +-1%, at a 95% confidence level, for isotope 239 concentrations ranging from 98 to 8%, on condition that an accurate isotopic analysis is available

Apres quelques rappels sur les calculs d'erreur et l'etablissement de la formule liant la determination de la masse d'un echantillon de plutonium a la reponse d'un calorimetre, a la connaissance de la composition isotopique et a celle des puissances specifiques, il est montre comment l'incertitude sur la masse depend de l'incertitude sur la mesure de la puissance dissipee par l'echantillon et des incertitudes, ponderees, sur les teneurs et les puissances specifiques des differents isotopes. Il est procede ensuite a une etude detaillee des differents parametres et des resultats des calculs d'erreur. Ils montrent que la calorimetrie permet d'atteindre la masse de plutonium presente dans un echantillon avec une precision de l'ordre de +-1% au niveau de confiance de 95% et cela pour un domaine de concentration de l'isotope 239, variant de 98 a 8%, a condition toutefois de disposer d'une analyse isotopique preciseFiles
