Conceptual design and detailed engineering of a double loop Pb15.7Li/ pressurized-He for nuclear fusion technology: a proposal of PN2O12 R and R Fusion Technology Project

Nuclear fusion technology emerging programmes require new scientific infrastructures clearly oriented from a programmatic standpoint. A Project is being undertaken to develop a conceptual and engineering design (anticipating its future construction) of a double loop of Pb 15 .7Li/ pressurized-He. Its technical rationale is based on two independent but linked loops, one of Pb15.7Li and the other of pressurized helium, both coupled through an ex- profess design heat exchanger (for simulation of heat transfer and head-pressure losses athydro-dynamics loads). This paper provides a rationale for the design, construction and Research and Development of the new loop, discussing the lay-out and possible configurations for the experimental purposes of the facility, justifies the interest of the facility for the scoping studies and modelling work to undertake, discriminates tritium (hydrogen) processing technologies among the list of possible candidates, explore the key instrumentation, anticipate the design characteristics of the doubly-cooled exchanger under magnetic field and finally dimension roughly the overall system.
