Binding agreements for nuclear safety: the global legal framework

The international dimension of nuclear safety was spotlighted in 1986 after the Chernobyl accident. In the following years, Member States showed increasing interest in putting into force a wide range of legally binding international instruments. The article presents an overview of the scope of the major safety-related Conventions adopted over the past 12 years, and briefly reviews the experience gained and steps towards their implementation
