Towards a sustainable energy strategy for the North
Description
The feasibility of renewable energy sources that use hydrogen as the foundation to sustainable economics in Canada's Northwest Territories are examined. Reviewed are techniques of using water electrolysis technologies for cost effective-storage of electrical energy as hydrogen, emerging fuel cell technologies to produce electrical and heat energy from stored hydrogen and the configuration of these components in ways that will meet the entire energy requirements of remote communities , isolated industrial sites and eventually the whole northern region. The issue of non-technical barriers preventing the deployment of these technologies and measures designed to overcome these barriers are also addressed. Prospects for other forms of renewable energy technologies such as wind, biomass, small hydro developments are also considered
