A Method for Local Determination of Young's Modulus of Pyrocarbon
Description
Pyrocarbon is a material of high elasticity. Application of the usual microhardness measuring technique fails to produce any indentation owing to complete elastic relaxation of the material whenever the load is removed. Microhardness measurements can successfully be used for to characterizing pyrocarbon by its elastic properties however, provided the sample was coated with a thin film film of material of good plasticity. One has to prove that, while producing measurable representative indentations, the coating does not influence the results of the measurements in an unknown manner. Vapour deposited copper was found a suitable material easy to handle for this purpose.
