Dose relevance of single exposure pathways. An evaluation of environmental monitoring programs for nuclear facilities

In choosing the appropriate environmental monitoring programme for nuclear installations one has to take into account the radiological relevance of the different pathways, either in concern of radioactivity releases or in concern of public radiation exposure. Such considerations have to be done for normal operation as well as for accident conditions. Furthermore the paper presents a list of criteria helping to approve the different sampling and measurement techniques and a comparison the monitoring programmes in the Federal Republic of Germany and in Switzerland.
