Z dependence of external bremsstrahlung: a laboratory experiment

A simple laboratory experiment to establish the Z dependence of external bremsstrahlung production in thin foils using a beta source and a NaI(Tl) scintillation detector, is described. Experimentally it is observed that the external bremsstrahlung intensity is proportional to Z1.97±0.06 in close agreement with the Z2 dependence expected by theory.
