Determination of crystallinity and water vapour permeability of biopolymer P3(HB-co-HHx)

Description

Films of P3HB and the biopolymer poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) [P3(HB-co-HHx)] containing 19.69mol% of the comonomer 3HHx were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction and its water vapour permeability determined based on the gravimetric method at temperatures of 25 and 50°C. The copolymer revealed a strong influence on the reduction of the crystallinity of the 3HHx units in relation to P3HB, on the other hand a greater permeability to water vapor of P3 (HB-co-HHx) was found, showing the reduction of the barrier to the transport of the permeant.
