Distributions of embedded gas and of alloy components in the deformation zone of metals

Description

Segregation of alloy components and diffusion of implanted noble gas ions in deformation zones caused by concentrated load and by bending is studied for copper, bronze and steel. Deformation of bronze by concentrated load results in a strong segregation of alloy components; the highest compression regions become enriched with tin. Non-monotonic distributions of alloy components and of embedded gas in a deformed surface, and deeper in the specimen, have been found. A correlation was observed between the positions of the embedded gas peaks and the boundaries of the plastic deformation zones. Different types of noble gas embedded into deformed and undeformed areas of the surface, as well as the preferred sputtering and uphill diffusion of elements in the mechanical stress field, make it possible to observe zones of enhanced deformation.
