Description

Full text: Moessbauer Spectrometry (MS) is particularly suited method for characterization of iron properties in steels. This technique can determine iron oxidation state as well as arrangement of iron lattice (bcc - body-centred cubic, fee - face-centred cubic). In the current work, we focus on characterization of iron environments in LC200N steel by MS. Due to high sample thickness we have employed rarely used backscattering geometry with detection of 14.4 keV photons. Samples with different thermal history were investigated: non-hardened, hardened, and hardened with rapid quenching. The elemental composition was checked by neutron activation analysis and X-ray fluorescence. Both sides of disk-shaped samples namely as-cut and polished ones depict differences in chemical compositions. By parameters of the Moessbauer spectra we were able to identify variations in the microstructure imposed by different treatment of the investigated samples. (authors)
