Elastic, nonlinear and plastic behaviour of the smectic A phase

Stress-strain measurements of layer compression in a smectic A liquid crystal are presented. In the istantaneous response a linear regime and a nonlinear behaviour, above the layer undulation instability are described. The time dependence of the observed stress relaxation is measured vs the applied strain. This plastic behaviour is discussed in relationship with the observed more oe less permanent layer distortion
