Expected health hazard effects of exposure to indoor radon decay products

Description
The majority of radiation burden to the public is caused by the exposition to radon decay products in homes. This has been shown to be a major contributor to lung cancer hazard. Recommendations of ICRP 60 and the NRPB statement on lung cancer risk from radon progenies exposure are discussed. Two case studies are reported, the estimation of lung cancer risk to the population living in Matraderecske, Hungary, and Umhausen, Tirol (Austria), with higher than world average radon exposure. Comparison of detected lung cancer cases is presented. (N.T.) 7 refs.; 5 tabs
