The Hermes-III Program

Description

Hermes III is a new gamma ray simulator being built at Sandia National Laboratories as part of the Simulation Technology Laboratory (STL). It will deliver a 20-ns FWHM, 20-ns 10% to 90% rise time, radiation pulse with a peak dose rate of 5 x 1012 rad(Si)/sec over a cylindrical volume with a 500-cm2 front surface area and 15 cm long. The radiation pulse will be uniform within a factor of two across the front surface and within a factor of four anywhere within the volume. The minimum dose rate will be 2.5 x 1012 rad(Si)/sec within this volume. The overall configuration of the Hermes-III accelerator is presented together with a discussion of the requirements for the individual components. A brief summary of the subsystems performance obtained to date is also presented. 20 refs., 11 figs
