New developments in the Canadian fuel economy

An outline of the structure of the Canadian energy economy is given, which is mainly characterized by domestic primary energy sources. These structures will be changed by the transition from crude oil and natural gas to new energy sources, and by a shifting of priorities. The greatest displacement possible within the power industry is expected as a result of the increasing supply of nuclear energy. Prognoses extending until the year 2000 consider the exhaustion of oil fields in the western part of the country, rising prices in the world oil market, the strengthened supply of nuclear energy and the transition to the working of Arctic oil fields at the sea shelves. It has been calculated that in the year 2000, about 30% of total energy requirements will be covered by nuclear and hydro-power plants. Although, in relation to 1970, an increase in the level of consumption until 2000 is also assumed, it still works out that the increasing rate of energy consumption will gradually go down. (UA)
