Description

The physical properties of the high temperature superconductor Y1Ba2Cu3O-δ (YBCO) are extremely sensitive to the overall oxygen stoichiometry and the arrangement of these oxygen atoms in the structure. The ease with which oxygen can be intercalated or disintercalated from the system without drastically altering the basic structure, and the profound influence this has on the superconducting and normal state properties, combined with its high superconducting transition temperature (Tc) has made YBCO one of the most widely studied compound, among the family of high Tc superconductors. This paper reviews the experimental and theoretical situation concerning the effect of oxygen stoichiometry and ordering on the superconductivity of YBCO, and presents the salient results obtained in the laboratory on this subject
