Description

It is suggested that a short-lived axion-like η6 of mass 30 GeV, with two photons as a major decay mode, should be produced diffractively at hadron colliders. This causes a genuine physical threshold around √s=500 GeV, which enables one to explain all high energy elastic scattering data, diffractive cosmic-ray exotics and hadronic photon events. New physics involving the new particle η6 as well as other observable effects are also discussed. (author) 20 refs., 1 fig
