Ferromagnetism of nonstoichiometric garnets-vanadates
Creators
Description
A possibility of magnetism occurrence at the expense of non-stoichiometry is shown taking diamagnetic vanadium-containing oxide garnets as an example. Based on the thermodynamic analysis of synthesis reactions, crystallochemical model calculations of the produced garnet elementary cell parameters and physico-chemical interpretation of possible phase-producing processes it is ascertained that some of the compounds considered should contain magnetic cations and consequently, possess intrinsic magnetic moment μ-baref. The reason for μef occurrence consists in non-stoichiometry, formed as a result of partial oxygen dissociation from the garnet and occurrence of V4+ (μ 1.73 μb) instead of V5+ (μ = 0)
