The SMC experiment and first results on the longitudinal deuteron spin asymmetry

  • 1. CERN, Geneva (Switzerland)

Description

The ''Proton Spin Crisis'' which followed the measurement of the proton spin structure function by EMC, led to a series of new experiments. We shall describe the CERN NA47 apparatus and method of asymmetry determination of SMC, after briefly introducing the phenomenology of deep inelastic scattering of polarized charged leptons on polarized nucleons, and its straightforward extension to deuterons. The recent results of SMC on the deuteron spin structure function are reviewed and compared with those of the SLAC E142 experiment on polarized 3He. (author)
