Description

The hydrogen exchange between the alkyl hydrogens of 1-amino-5-methyl-hexane and concentrated sulfuric acid was followed by isotope techniques using derativatives labelled with tritium at various positions. It has been established that tritium atoms attached to carbon atoms 4 and 6, respectively, tend to exchange at identical rates in sulfuric acid, with activation enthalpies of 13.79 and 14.36 kcal/mol, respectively. The tertiary tritium, i.e., the one attached to carbon atom 5 proved to be incapable of exchange. (F.Gy.)
