Filtered neutron beams for cancer therapy
Description
Some of the potential applications for intense beams of filtered neutrons are in the biomedical sciences. In particular, the use of intermediate-energy neutrons for the treatment of malignant brain tumours using the technique known as neutron capture therapy (NCT) is currently arousing world-wide interest. In the UK the first investigative steps in a combined experimental and theoretical programme have recently been taken. The rationale for NCT and the history of its use are described. (author)
