Destruction of tetrafluoromethane in a sliding electric discharge

Description

The results of CF4 decomposition experiments in moving electrical discharge are described in this study. A new type of glide-arc apparatus with individually cooled titanium electrodes, 0.2 mm slot, 1.5 kW, 30 kV electrical power was constructed. The electrode tilt angle affecting the length of the electrical discharge is an important factor in this type of apparatus. Since CF4 is a typical electric discharge interrupter, CF4 vapor was fed between the electrodes mixed with argon or air, so that the discharge was continuous up to concentrations of about 90 % of CF4. Fluoride decomposition products were collected in alkaline washes with KOH or Ba(OH)2. The process efficiency evaluated from the input / output ratio was 30-40 %. Decomposition of the input CF4 and capture of decomposed products is influenced by the structure and quality of absorbers, in this case realized by glass frits with ISO 4793-S0-S1 grain . Quantitative results can be influenced by cascaded wiring of individual glige-arc segments, which is allowed by the proposed design. (authors)
