Double beta decay in 82Se

Description

A time projection chamber was used to look for double beta decay in 82Se. The detected two electron event signal was analyzed for evidence of ββ (2ν), ββ(Oν), and ββ(Oν,B). No evidence for ββ(Oν) or ββ(Oν,B) was found and lower limits on the half lives of these modes were found to be 1.2 x 1022 years (68% CL) and 6.5 x 1020 years (68% CL) respectively. An extensive study of the background processes was used in a maximum likelihood analysis of the candidate spectrum to look for ββ(2ν). The result finds the data consistent with the ββ(2ν) of 82Se at a half life of (0.8 to 1.7) x 1020 years (68% CL)
