Description
The purpose of this project is to develop the technology of UF4 production from depleted UF6, in order to utilize it as a raw material for the production of depleted uranium (DU) metal. The DU metal is to be used as a shielding material for the manufacturing of the large spent fuel cask, which is to be developed in the near future. The process is that the depleted UF6 is reduced to UF4, with hydrogen in a vertical pipe reactor. The pilot plant(30kg-U/hr) for UF4 production was installed and test operation was conducted. The produced UF4 was of good color, of fine particle size (5-10 μm), of high purity (>98 5UE.), and had high tap density (3.7-4.3 g/cm3). (Author)
