The state of atmospheric emissions and the air quality transboundary air pollution
Description
At the moment the Estonian national energy strategy is being compiled. At least until the year 2010 the main attention will be paid to oil-shale energetics. SO2 emissions have to decrease by 30% from the level of 1980 by the year 1997, and by 80% by the year 2005. Emissions of nitrogen compounds have to remain at the 1987 level. The use of 19 halogenous hydrocarbons damaging the ozone layer have been prohibited. Due to the environmental problems, caused by oil-shale fuel other local fuels, recurrent energy sources, use of natural gas and nuclear fuel, dispersion of the production of electricity, co-production of heating fuel and electricity should be considered as possible alternative opportunities in the energy strategy. The selection of a fuel depends on the price of electricity produced of it. Environmental expenditures will be one of the most significant components of the price in the future. (au)
