Description

Laboratory-scale research indicates that high-dose pretreatment of cellulosic plant wastes by ionizing γ-rays or energized electrons, combined with enzymatic or chemical processing, contributes to the release of the nutritive substance of these wastes. The availability and cost of alternative sources of ionizing energy are reviewed for the purpose of evaluating the feasibility of significant economic utilization of this vast renewable bioresource.
