Basic plan of the nuclear power utilization for FY 1985

General principle and basic plan of the nuclear power utilization of Japan for FY 1985 is presented based on the decisions of the Atomic Energy Commission and the Nuclear Safety Commission. This plan aims at promotion of peaceful uses of nuclear energy such as nuclear power generation under special consideration on nuclear safety, development of radiation utilization technology, and international cooperation in the field of nuclear energy. Basic Plan of the Nuclear Power Utilization for FY 1985 consists concretely on the following items written below. First, enforcement of nuclear safety measures is to be carried out by filling up of nuclear safety administration, promotion of nuclear safety research, filling up of disasters prevention, improvement of radiation protection and control, and safety assurance in the nuclear fuel cycle establishment and others. Second, promotion of nuclear power generation is to be made by solution of siting problem, and amelioration and standardization of nuclear facilities. Third, establishment of nuclear fuel cycle is to be made by uranium resources assurance, and promotion of domestic enrichment technology, reprocessing and utilization of recovered nuclear fuel and radwaste management. Fourth, the plan aims at development of FBR, ATR and multi-purpose HTGCR. Fifth, nuclear fusion research, sixth, R and D for nuclear ship, and seventh, radiation utilization are to be promoted. This plan aims also enforcement of basic research, and education and training of R and D personnel as the eighth item, and promotion of international cooperation as the ninth item. Tenth, this plan aims at enforcement of nuclear safeguard measures based on NPT and physical protection measures. Budget for FY 1985 amounts to 338,924 million yen. (Takagi, S.)
