Description
In addition to incineration the USEPA bas recommended a number of alternate treatment methods for PCBs. The alternate treatment methods include biological treatment, solidification, vitrification, potassium polyethylene glycolate (KPEG), solvent washing/extraction and granular activated carbon. The University of Missouri Columbia in cooperation with Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory bas developed a solvent/floatation method with radiolytic dechlorination for removal and destruction of PCB compounds in soil. A bench top demonstration of the process was used to remove Aroclor 1260 from soil. The floated alcohol-oil-Aroclor 1260 solution was treated with a gamma source located at the Missouri University Research Reactor. The dose constants for the PCB dechlorination rate in the floatant and in the soil is reported. An economic analysis of the process is also reported
