Ionizing radiation - an unknown factor?. Assessment of health hazards

Description
For a large part of the population, radioactivity is a strange thing they know nothing about, except that it may be dangerous, and this of course is disquieting. This is why the subject of nuclear energy raises emotions, if not fear among people, also because they are not aware that radioactivity is a natural phenomenon just like the sunlight or the weather. The author explains radioactivity in the light of other risks of life and shows that the application of ionizing radiation, or the peaceful uses of atomic energy, involve risks ranking rather at the bottom of the list of man-made hazards. Abstract (German)
Radioaktivitaet ist fuer viele etwas Unbekanntes, Fremdes und deshalb oft auch etwas Unheimliches. Dabei loest sie Emotionen aus, und bei vielen Leuten kommt Besorgnis, ja Angst auf, wenn von der Kernenergie die Rede ist. Dabei ist die Radioaktivitaet eine so alltaegliche Naturerscheinung wie die Sonnenstrahlung und das Wetter. Der Verfasser kommt zum Schluss, dass das gesundheitliche Risiko, hervorgehend aus der durch den Menschen genutzten radioaktiven Strahlung, einschliesslich der Nutzung der Kernenergie, verglichen mit anderen Risiken sehr klein ist.
