Nuclear waste management at the Loviisa NPP

Description
The spent fuel generated at the Loviisa NPP is returned back to Russia based on an agreement between Imatran Voima Oy (IVO) and the Russian fuel supplier V/O Techsnabexport (TSE) covering all the fuel delivered by TSE. The spent fuel is reprocessed at the Chelyabinsk reprocessing plant. Reprocessing wastes are not returned to Finland. Operating wastes are stored at the power plant. Spent ion-exchange resins and evaporator concentrates are stored in large storage tanks. Maintenance waste is packed in steel drums. A solidification plant based on cementation has been designed for the wet wastes but due to good storage situation it has not been constructed yet. IVO has developed treatment methods for volume reduction of operating wastes. Cesium removal plant has been constructed in the power plant. Microbiological decomposing of organic maintenance waste and spent ion-exchange resins has been developed to operational level. A final repository for operating wastes has been planned into the bedrock of the power plant. A detailed decommissioning plan has been made for the Loviisa NPP. All activated and contaminated material will be removed from the plant and disposed in an enlargement of the repository for operating wastes
