Tune spread due to current ripple and momentum spread in the Main Ring

  • 1. Fermilab., Batavia, IL

Description

The presence of ripple in the main ring power supplies causes the fields in the dipole and quadrupole magnets to have a time dependence with harmonic components being multiples of 60 Hz. These ripples cause the tune to have a similar time modulation. When the tune is swept around by the ripple, a deterioration in beam size and lifetime can occur if the tune comes close to or crosses a resonance
