Iron reduction with a new type bead resin at Fugen nuclear power station

Description

Reduction of iron transport to reactor core is essential to decrease occupational dose in boiling water type reactors. Powder resin filter or hollow fiber filter meets the requirement for recently constructed BWRs. For the stations constructed in early days, however, installation of these filters costs high in addition to the conventional deep-bed-type condensate demineralizers. New Gel Resin was investigated to remove iron crud economically since long aged bead resins showed better iron removal efficiency than new resins because of irreversible swelling with oxidation. A different type of new cation resin with the third monomer is tested in Fugen pursuing the same purpose. This paper describes the results of crud iron removal characteristic and sulfate ion generation with the new type resin tested in Fugen
