This paper presents an overview of the status and future trends of the nuclear power plants in Eastern Europe. It describes the technology of the Russian nuclear power plants (WWER and RBMK) and its operating performance in terms of energy availability. It also provides the current status of the implementation and major findings of the IAEA Extra-budgetary Programme on the safety of WWER and RBMK nuclear power plants, including the main measures that have been taken or are being implemented to improve the safety of these nuclear power plants.
