Exposure to and effects of radiation caused by energy conversion

Description

First some peculiarities of radioative substances as distinct from non-radioactive substances are explained and a short survey is given of the way in which the exposure of the population to natural radiation is modified by measures of energy conversion and energy saving. Next recent fingings about possible effects of this radiation exposure on health are discussed, and the so-called hormetic effects of radiation are commented on. Finally some of the consequences of this exposure-effect analysis for optimizing radiation protection measures are pointed out. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Zuerst werden einige Besonderheiten von radioaktiven Stoffen gegenueber nicht-radioaktiven Stoffen deutlich gemacht und ein kurzer Ueberblick ueber die Modifizierung der natuerlichen Strahlenexposition der Bevoelkerung durch Energieumwandlungs- und -sparmassnahmen gegeben. Anschliessend werden die neueren Kenntnisse ueber die moeglichen gesundheitlichen Konsequenzen dieser Strahlenexposition diskutiert und dabei auch einige Bemerkungen ueber sogenannte 'hormetische' Strahlenwirkungen gemacht. Schliesslich sollen einige Konsequenzen dieser Expositions-Wirkungsanalyse fuer die Optimierung von Strahlenschutzmassnahmen aufgezeigt werden. (orig.)
