Sublethal damage and DNA double strand breaks have similar RBE-LET relationships: evidence and implications

  • 1. Amsterdam Univ. (Netherlands). Lab. for Radiobiology

Description

An important problem with the hypothesis that DNA strand breaks are the primary lesions causing cell reproductive death is the weak dependence of the induction of double strand breaks on LET in contrast with the strong dependence of cell inactivation on LET. The author analyses this problem and examines RBE-LET relationships for DNA double strand breaks and sub-lethal damage and discusses linear and quadratic terms in dose-effect relations for cell reproductive death.
