Detection of the [S III] 33.47 micron line in the Orion nebula

  • 1. Center for Radiophysics and Space Research, Cornell University

Description

A strong detection of the 33 μm infrared forbidden line of S III from the Trapezium region of the Orion Nebula is reported. The current observations indicate a wavelength of 33.47 +- 0.02 μm for the line, which is within 0.03 μm of Greenberg's predicted wavelength. When combined with a measurement of the [S III] 18.71 μm line, an e;ectron density of approx.9000 cm-3 is deduced if a simple uniform density model is assumed for the emitting region. This density is similar to the results of other line ratio results
