Overview of KAERI research activities on pyroprocessing

Description
Pyroprocessing is a technology for recovering useful elements from spent fuel that separates uranium, but keeps all the transuranic elements together, hence has strong proliferation resistance. The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has developed pyroprocessing to recycle the light water reactor (LWR) fuel for use in fast reactors. The KAERI pyroprocessing flow sheet has a series of steps including the decladding, voloxidation, electrolytic reduction, electrorefining, electrowinning, and molten salt waste treatment. This paper provides an up to date outline of the KAERI research activities on the pyroprocessing development. KAERI has constructed the Advanced Spent Fuel Conditioning Process Facility (ACPF), and laboratory scale front-end pyroprocessing (decladding, voloxidation, electrolytic reduction) apparatuses have been installed. KAERI is in the design phase of Mock-up facility for the Engineering Scale Pyroprocessing Facility (ESPF). The design of Korean Advanced Pyroprocessing Facility (KAPF) will be started in 2010
