Mechanical properties of ZrO2 + 12 % CeO2 ceramics with CaO, Y2O3, Nb2O5 additions

Description
A study was made on mechanical properties of transformation hardened ceramics of ZrO2 + 12 % CeO2 composition with CaO, Y2O3 and Nb2O5-additions in amount of 1 %. Doping elements are arranged in Ca, Y, Nb series by their efficiency for strength increase (reduction of average grain size). The level of material crack resistance correlates with lattice volume of tetragonal solid solution. It is shown that increase of crack resistance is related with intensity of destabilizing effect of doping addition on stability of tetragonal solid solution. The use of CaO as doping addition provides the maximal growth of strength and crack resistance
