Why store energy when energy is so cheap?

Energy costs (in real terms) have fallen, so many view it as a cheap commodity. Converting fuel into electricity and storing it has to be compared against the cost of generating on demand. Although there are technical benefits of energy storage, the evaluation needs to consider the cost of alternatives. Widespread use of energy storage depends on the cost of energy in relation to the costs of generating, transmitting and distributing power. (author)
