Environmental geologic studies of the proposed radioactive waste disposal site near village Magyaregregy, Hungary, for the Paks nuclear power plant
Description
In accordance with the provisions of the Hungarian nuclear law, several areas were surveyed within 100 km distance of the Paks nuclear power plant under construction, which satisfy the requirements concerning the disposal and permanent storage of low and medium level radioactive wastes. In the first phase of the work ten possible sites were allocated in the North and North-West areas of Mountain Mecsek. The choice of the sites was further narrowed according to the planned waste storage technology. As a result of the explorations, it was possible to allocate an area in the region of village Magyaregregy, where short and medium half-life radioactive isotope wastes could be safely disposed using concrete pits sunk into clay layers. The geographic, morphologic, geologic, hydrologic and soil mechanical characteristics of the proposed site were investigated in detail. (author)
