Effects of water impurities on cracking of sensitized stainless steel in a BWR test loop

Description

The effects of water impurities of oxygen, hydrogen, hydrogen peroxide, sulfate, nitrate and oxalate on the environmental cracking in sensitized Type 304 stainless steel were studied in a test loop in the Ringhals-1 BWR. Constant elongation rate tensile (CERT) tests were made in two autoclaves connected in series with impurities added to the second autoclave so that the effects of impurities in reactor water on cracking could be directly observed. The reactor was operating on hydrogen water chemistry during the tests. Results were compared to similar laboratory CERT tests. Environmental cracking was found primarily to result from hydrogen peroxide, oxygen, and sulfate. The other species investigated had only a marginal effect. Test results were in good agreement with laboratory information, although no laboratory tests are available for hydrogen peroxide
