Distribution of gamma radiation from a 60Co source in water

  • 1. Hitachi, Ltd., Central Research Laboratory, Kokubunji, Tokyo (Japan)

Description

Measurements have been made of the distribution of gamma-rays from a point source of 60Co in an infinite water medium. Energy flux spectra were measured by a scintillation spectrometer for penetration distances between 5.49 mean free path and 12.8 mean free path, while dose rates were measured by ionization chambers for distances between 0.610 mean free path and 2.75 mean free path. The results were compared with calculated results obtained by the moments method. A satisfactory agreement was obtained between dose buildup factors given by the experimental results and those given by the calculated results. On the other hand, a slight discrepancy seemed to exist between the experimental energy flux spectra and the calculated ones. (author)
