ESR of photoproduced nitroaromatic radicals: correlation between photolysis and radiolysis

Description

Certain nitroaromatic compounds were photolyzed in tetrahydrofuran solution to produce spin adduct free radicals, and the hyperfine splitting constant a/sup N/ was determined by in situ ESR spectroscopy. The values of a/sup N/ were proportional to those of the anion radical obtained by other workers by radiolysis of the same compounds in aqueous solution. This proportionality suggests that information on the effects of molecular structure on the electron affinity of anion radicals of radiosensitizer compounds can be obtained by photolysis, which is a more accessible technique than radiolysis
