Welding with optical fibers pulsed YAG laser beam of PWR fuel rods

  • 1. Franco-Belge de Fabrication de Combustibles, 26 - Romans (France)
  • 2. Fragema, 69 - Lyon (France)

Description

The reliability of the welds on the fuel rods which are the first barrier for the fissile material and the fission products must be extremely high. The characteristics of the pulsed YAG laser welding process allow the obtaining of the quality criteria for these welds and give some advantages in relation to the specific nature of the process, and particularly its high power density. The possibility of serving different workstations from a single laser source by using time share modules and fibre optics allow increased production rate and keeps the investment acceptable.
