Are there causal vacuum solutions with the symmetries of the Goedel universe in higher-derivative gravity

Description

A globally causal vacuum solution with the symmetries of the Godel universe is obtained in the framework of higher-derivative gravity. This very peculiar and rare result has no similar one in the standard general relativity. The Reboucas-Tiomno universe, i.e., the unique completely causal Goedel-type solution of Einstein's field equations with the algebraic Segre characteristics [(1,11)] is shown to be a special case of our solution. It is also shown that one model is an imbedding of the 3-dimensional anti-de Litter universe in 4-dimensional space-time. (authors)

Abstract (Portuguese)

Uma solucao de vacuo globalmente causal com as simetrias do universo de Godel e obtida, no contexto de gravitacao de altas derivadas. Esse resultado muito peculiar e raro nao tem similar na relatividade geral padrao. Mostra-se que o universo de Reboucas-Tiomno, i.e., a unica solucao completamente causal do tipo Goedel das equacoes de campo de Einstein com a caracteristica algebrica de Segre [(1,11)] e um caso especial da nossa solucao. Mostra-se tambem que nosso modelo e um 'imbedding' do anti-universo de Litter 3-dimensional no espaco tempo 4-dimensional. (L.C.)
