Description

Some hydrogen embrittlement characteristics of Alloy 600 have been measured on smooth tensile specimens in relationship with the microstructure and the testing conditions. A value of the critical hydrogen concentration for intergranular cracking at 293 K was obtained. The influence of different parameters including the carbide precipitation, the pre-strain level, the strain rate and the temperature supports the role of hydrogen transport by dislocations in the embrittlement process via the existence of local hydrogen supersaturations associated with dislocation pile-ups.
