Scattering lengths
Description
The total neutron-atom scattering length is defined by considering the various interaction which intervene when a neutron passes through matter (neutron-charge interaction, magnetic interaction, spin-orbit interaction, contributions of the hypothetical dipole moment and electric polarizability, and neutron-nucleus interaction). The characteristics of the various techniques using neutron scattering are shortly discussed with their respective accuracy. All physical phenomena involved in the interaction of neutron waves with matter have been used to determine scattering lengths: extinction, reflection and refraction, diffraction and direct inteference as well as gravitational acceleration
